The era of electric mobility is upon us and everything from cars to trucks is undergoing comprehensive “electrification”. Heavy-duty trucks getting electrified may seem odd, but there are already several electric trucks roaming the streets. Mentioned below are the ten best of them:
Volvo VNR
Volvo has always been the pioneer in automotive safety and now they are aiming to take the lead in the electric trucks’ race. The VNR is a baby version of a traditional full-size heavy-duty Volvo truck and its conventional looks allow it to blend well with the rest of the crowd much easily, all the while emitting zero poisonous gases in the environment. For a rather small size, the VNR has more than enough power to full heavy loads. Its 455hp (340kW) helps it to attain a maximum speed of 105 km/h (65mph) . The effective range has been rated at 240 km (150 miles) which is adequate for an intra-country hauler.
DAF CF
The Dutch truck maker has also geared up to provide tough competition to its rivals in this electric mobility era. The DAF CF lineup is meant to take on this challenge and the improvements have already started to show results. The improved version boasts several upgradations which include a total of 700kg weight reduction that has improved the payload capacity and taken the total range to over 220km (137 miles). The electric motor silently delivers 282hp (210kW) to the wheels and allows the truck to silently cruise the city streets without creating any rumble.
Scania electric truck
Though the company hasn’t unveiled any particular name for its light-duty electric truck lineup, though, it is confirmed that there will be a battery-driven Scania in the near future. The regional truck will be available in two variants and its exterior has been kept compact to improve aerodynamics which in turn will improve the range. The denser battery pack version delivers a decent range of up to 250 km (150 miles). Both the battery packs power the same motor that has a peak output of 395hp (295 kW) and 2200 Nm of torque. The price for Scania’s electric truck isn’t revealed yet.
Lion 6 – Amazon’s electric truck
The Lion 6 is a purpose-built Canadian commercial electric truck that aims to revolutionize & de-carbonize the North American market. The company’s popularity can be estimated from the fact that Amazon has placed a huge order for 2500 units of its Lion 6 & 8 models. The Lion 6 model packs a class-leading range of 290 km (180 miles), thanks to a battery capacity of 252 kWh which also helps the motor to generate a healthy 335 hp (250kW). The price for Lion 6 is estimated to be a bit less than $230,000 since the starting price of its elder version costs upward of $230,000.
MAN eTGM
MAN has been delivering its fully electric truck eTGM since 2019, which makes it one of the earliest electric truck makers in the market. At the heart of this 26-tonne truck, lies a 354hp (264kW) electric motor that is powered by batteries placed under the cabin and the frame. The dense battery setup is good enough to last for 200 km (125 miles) and is also used to power the auxiliary units such as the A/C system. The eTGM can handle the same payload capacity as its diesel counterparts and can also be quickly recharged which makes it a good clean alternative to diesel haulers.
Kenworth K270e
The Kenworth 270e aims to be the American rival to all the electric trucks rapidly proliferating the logistics market. The K270e is based on a diesel truck’s platform but still manages to deliver an astounding range of 322km (200 miles) when fitted with its optional 282kW battery pack. The top of the line motor punches out 459hp (342kW), which is plenty enough to haul heavy loads from a standstill. Moreover, the truck is capable of maintaining 64km/h (40mph) at its full load and the purchasing process has been made easier thanks to special leasing plans.
Mercedes-Benz e-Actros
Mercedes-Benz Actros is without a doubt the most popular heavy-duty truck that has been dominating the supply market for quite some time. Now, the truck has taken another lead by achieving the goal of being the first heavy-duty all-electric pickup truck in the industry. The e-truck is based on the tried platform of Actros and has been fitted with twin electric motors each delivering an output of 169hp (126kW), taking the combined total to 300hp (225kW). The 240kWh battery is quick charge compatible and returns a range of 200 km (124 miles). Unfortunately, the price of this ultra-modern German truck hasn’t been unveiled yet.
Volta Zero
Out of all the electric trucks, the Volta Zero is unarguably the most simplistic yet futuristic truck of all. Britain’s 16-tonne truck will return a range of expectedly 200km (124 miles) upon a full charge which is good for a city truck that has regenerative brakes. Little is known about the other aspects of this truck, but the company has recently inked an agreement with Proterra to acquire its batteries. The batteries are considered to be state-of-the-art and can deliver 4000 charging cycles without any considerable degradation.
Hyundai Xcient Fuel cell truck
Hyundai has entered the modern logistics market with the unveiling of its Xcient fuel cell truck. As the name suggests, the truck isn’t all-electric, rather it is powered by fuel cells that are charged by hydrogen. The biggest advantage of being hydrogen-powered is that it eliminates range anxiety and can be refilled in under 10 minutes. The first version of Xcient can cover 400 km (248.5 miles) in a single charge, the long-distance tractor unit will be capable of covering 1000 km (621 miles). The maximum power output from the motor can reach 350kW (469 hp) which is sufficient for a max speed of 85 km/h (53 mph).
IVECO Nikola Tre
The IVECO Nikole Tre is a joint project between the well establish European truck maker IVECO and the fresh American clean energy startup Nikola. The truck will be based on IVECO’s already successful S-Way heavy-duty truck, though, it will mainly be marketed as a regional truck with a range of up to 400 km (248.5 miles). The continuous output is rated at 480kW (643 hp), so, you can expect the peak output to be significantly higher than 480kW (643 hp). The truck is in the preliminary stage of development and is expected to hit the roads in 2023.
